What Is BFCM? A Shopify Merchant’s Guide to Black Friday & Cyber Monday 2026

BFCM stands for Black Friday Cyber Monday, the four-day shopping stretch that starts on the Friday after US Thanksgiving and ends on Cyber Monday. In 2026, that’s Friday, Nov 27 to Monday, Nov 30. It is the biggest selling window of the year for many online stores: Shopify merchants alone sold $14.6 billion worldwide over BFCM 2025.

This guide explains what BFCM means, where the names come from, why it matters, and what changes if you sell personalized products.

What does BFCM stand for?

BFCM is shorthand for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving. Cyber Monday is the Monday that follows. Together with the weekend between them, they make up one four-day window, and many stores plan it as a single campaign rather than two separate sales.

BFCM 2026 dates

Event Date Day
US Thanksgiving Nov 26, 2026 Thursday
Black Friday Nov 27, 2026 Friday
Cyber Monday Nov 30, 2026 Monday

Black Friday always falls the day after US Thanksgiving, so the dates shift slightly each year.

Where the names come from

“Black Friday” is generally traced to Philadelphia in the 1950s and 1960s, where police used it for the chaotic day after Thanksgiving, with heavy crowds, traffic and accidents. The popular story that it refers to stores going “from red to black” isn’t the original source.

“Cyber Monday” is newer. It was coined in 2005 in a National Retail Federation press release, based on the observation that many people went back to fast office internet connections on the Monday after Thanksgiving and shopped online.

Why BFCM matters for Shopify merchants

Scale is the main reason. According to Shopify’s own data, merchants generated $14.6 billion in global sales over BFCM 2025, up 27% from 2024. More than 81 million shoppers bought from Shopify-powered brands, and the average cart was $114.70. Sales peaked at $5.1 million per minute.

It also matters for smaller stores. Shopify reported that over 15,800 entrepreneurs made their first sale during the weekend, and more than 94,900 merchants had their highest-selling day ever. (These figures are Shopify’s unaudited gross merchandise volume, and Shopify notes that its methodology changes from year to year.)

What to get ready before BFCM

You don’t need a huge campaign, but a few basics are worth settling early:

  • Offers. Decide what you’re discounting and for how long, and set up codes or automatic discounts in advance.
  • Inventory and shipping. Check stock for your best sellers and confirm the last order dates you can promise for delivery.
  • Site and checkout. Test your store on mobile, and run a test order from product page to checkout.
  • Support. Decide who answers customer questions over the weekend.

What’s different if you sell custom or personalized products

Personalized and made-to-order products add steps that standard products don’t have. A mug with a customer’s name on it can’t ship the minute it’s ordered, and a missing detail means a delayed order or an email back to the customer. During a rush, those small delays add up.

Lead times and cutoffs. A date picker on the product page lets you set a minimum lead time, block dates you can’t ship on and, with the right plan, stop offering same-day dates after a daily cutoff. With Easify Custom Product Options, lead time and blocked dates need the Pro plan, and a daily cutoff time needs Premium. Here’s how to set cutoff times or block holiday dates on a date picker.

Missing or wrong details. Required fields stop customers adding a personalized item to the cart before filling in the details you need, and conditional logic shows only the fields that matter for the choices they’ve made, which keeps forms short. On the Free plan, the options a customer picks also appear in orders, packing slips and emails. See how to make a custom field required before add to cart.

Average order value. Paid add-ons such as gift wrap let shoppers add extras to a personalized item. Add-ons and gift wrap need the Pro plan. Here’s how to add paid add-ons like gift wrap.

Shoppers who want to see it first. A live preview shows the customer’s text or photo on the product before they buy, which can reduce “is this what I ordered?” questions. Live preview is a Premium feature. This guide shows how to show a live preview as customers personalize a product.

One honest limitation: Easify is an options-based app, not a visual design or mockup editor. If your products need a drag-and-drop design canvas, a dedicated designer tool is a better fit. Several of the features above also need a paid plan, so check which ones you need. A free plan is available, and paid plans come with a 14-day free trial.

Conclusion

BFCM is the Friday-to-Monday shopping window that starts the day after US Thanksgiving, and in 2026 it runs from Nov 27 to Nov 30. If you sell custom or personalized products, plan for longer lead times, complete order details and clear cutoff dates before the rush starts. More BFCM guides are on the way over the next few weeks, and you can find our other how-tos on the Easify Insights blog.

If you want to have any of this in place before Nov 27, you can start with Easify Custom Product Options on the free plan. The plans that include the date picker, add-ons and live preview all come with a 14-day free trial, so you can test them on your own products before the rush.
