How to Swap the Product Image Automatically Based on the Option a Customer Selects

How to Swap the Product Image Automatically Based on the Option a Customer Selects

Shopify swaps the product image on its own when each variant has an image assigned, but it allows only one image per variant. For choices that aren’t variants, such as an engraving style, a finish or an add-on, you need an options app with image switching, a separate product for each look, or custom code. The right one depends on what your shoppers are choosing and how many images each choice needs.

This guide is about the image shoppers see on your product page when they pick an option. It isn’t about editing your own product photos in Shopify admin.

What to look for in an automatic image swap

Check these before you pick a method:

  • Variant or custom option. Shopify swaps images for variants only. If the choice is a custom option, you need something else.
  • How many images each choice needs. One photo per choice is simple. A full gallery per choice is a bigger job.
  • Where it works. Some methods change the image on the product page only, not in the cart or at checkout.
  • Setup and upkeep. Count the time to set it up, and who fixes it when a theme update breaks it.
  • Theme compatibility. Some methods depend on how your theme builds its gallery.
  • Cost. Check which features are free and which need a paid plan.

Four ways to swap a product image when an option is selected

Approach Works with Images per choice Setup effort Upkeep Best for
Shopify variant images Shopify variants only One per variant Low Low Choices that are real variants, such as color or size
A separate product per look Each look is its own product A full gallery per product Medium Medium Looks that differ a lot in photos, price or content
Options app with image switching Custom options, not only variants Images matched to each option value Low to medium App updates Custom choices without creating a variant for each
Custom code or theme edit Whatever you build Whatever you code High You maintain it Stores with a developer and an unusual layout

Shopify variant images

This is the built-in route. In your product’s Variants section, you assign an image to each variant, and Shopify shows that image when a shopper picks the variant. The limit, from Shopify Help: “Each variant supports only one assigned image.”

Many themes also have a setting that shows the selected variant’s media first, but it only works for images assigned to variants. It’s the best choice when your options are real variants and one photo per choice is enough.

A separate product per look

If each look needs its own gallery, you can make each look its own product and let shoppers move between them. Shopify points merchants who want a group of images per option to its Combined Listings app, which requires a Shopify Plus or Enterprise plan.

Options apps offer a similar route. Easify’s cross-product links, for example, connect swatches to separate product pages, so a swatch click opens the matching product while each product keeps its own images. You can read how in our guide to merging multiple variants into one listing. The trade-off is more products to manage.

An options app with image switching

An options app adds custom choices to the product page, such as a style, a finish or an add-on. With image switching, the main product image changes when the shopper picks one of those choices. The choices stay out of your variants, so you keep a lean product setup. Keeping variants lean also makes inventory easier to manage. The next section shows how Easify does it.

Custom code or a theme edit

Developers sometimes write JavaScript that filters the product gallery by the image’s alt text and the selected option. Shopify Community replies describe this approach, and they also warn about performance trade-offs. It gives you full control. You also own the upkeep, and a theme update can break it. It only makes sense when you have a developer and a layout no app handles.

Easify Custom Product Options: best for image switching on custom options

Best for: merchants who want the product image to follow a custom option without creating a variant for every choice.

Key features:

  • Free to use. Image switching is available on the Free plan, so you can try it before paying for anything.
  • Six option types. It works with Dropdown, Radio Button, Button, Checkbox, Color Swatch and Image Swatch options.
  • Your own product images. It uses the images you already uploaded to the product. Each image is matched to an option value, so there’s no separate image library to maintain.
  • Rated 4.9/5 from 3,000+ reviews on the Shopify App Store, as of October 2026.

Limitation: it changes the image on the product page only, not in the cart or at checkout, and it doesn’t select a different Shopify variant. If you need a different image for every combination of variants, Shopify’s native variant images or a separate product per look will fit better.

For the full reference, see Easify’s step-by-step documentation. If this is your first time, our setup guide covers installing the app and creating an option set.

Which method should you choose?

  • Your choices are real variants, such as color or size, and one photo each is enough. Use Shopify’s variant images. It’s free and built in.
  • Each look needs a full gallery, price or page of its own. Use a separate product per look.
  • Your choices are custom options or add-ons, and you want to keep your variants lean. Use an options app with image switching.
  • You have a developer and a layout no app handles. Use custom code.

You can also combine them. Many stores use variant images for the core choices and an options app for the extras.

Conclusion

An automatic image swap helps shoppers see what they’re buying, and it reduces questions and returns. Shopify’s variant images cover the simple case. When your choices are custom options, or you’d rather keep your variants lean, an options app with image switching is the quicker route than a product for every look or custom code.
